Make it stand out

The Musical Director’s Welcome

“I had the honour of taking on the baton of the Poynton Royal British Legion Concert Band back in October 2022.”

Welcome to the Poynton Royal British Legion Band, and thank you for taking the time to visit our website. Whether you are a long-standing supporter of the band, a prospective new member, or simply someone with an interest in brass and wind music within our community, I’m delighted to introduce you to who we are and what we stand for.

I had the honour of taking on the baton of the Poynton Royal British Legion Concert Band back in October 2022, and it has been a privilege to lead such a warm, passionate and dedicated group of musicians ever since. Poynton RBL Band has a proud and rich history, rooted in service, remembrance and community music-making. As Musical Director, I have the pleasure of working with players who are not only talented but also deeply committed to the values of the Royal British Legion. Our members span a wide range of ages and backgrounds, united by a shared love of performance, camaraderie, and musical excellence. It is this mixture of experience, enthusiasm and community spirit that gives the band its unique character.

Our mission is simple: to serve our community through music. Throughout the year we perform at a variety of events both locally and further afield—from summer fêtes and civic ceremonies to formal concerts and of course the Remembrance season, which remains at the heart of our identity. These occasions allow us to connect with audiences of all ages, to mark important moments in our national life, and to celebrate the role of music in bringing people together.

The band continues to develop and evolve, and I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made in recent years. We place great emphasis on creating a supportive and welcoming environment for all musicians, whether they are seasoned performers or returning players looking to rekindle their enjoyment of ensemble music. Rehearsals are purposeful but friendly, full of laughter as well as learning, and every player contributes to the vibrant energy that defines the band.

We also look to the future with excitement. As our membership grows, so does our ambition—both in the repertoire we tackle and in the musical opportunities we offer. From themed concerts and collaborative events to international links through our twinning associations, we are always exploring new ways to enrich the cultural life of Poynton and beyond.

If you are considering joining us—whether on brass, woodwind, percussion or even a support role—you will find a warm welcome waiting. Community music thrives when people feel valued and included, and we are always keen to hear from new players who would like to be part of our journey.

Thank you again for visiting our site. I hope you enjoy exploring our pages, learning about our history, and discovering what we have planned for the months ahead. We look forward to meeting you at a rehearsal, seeing you at a performance, or simply sharing our love of music with you.
